I did this just yesterday with the Platinum Pro on my PB1400, and it worked
just fine updating to v3.02 and using the GV PC Card ROM Update 2 firmware
updater. This has upped my connection speed from 28.8 to 33.6.
Have you been using the card before you tried the upgrade (just trying to
establish if it ever has been installed and working properly)? Is there a
PC card icon on the desktop with a little coloured Global Village logo on
it? Have you selected 'PowerPort PC card' in the modems control panel?
If so, try opening Zterm and, provided it will recognise the card (may need
to choose PowerPort PC Card from a drop down menu after startup), if you
enter the command ATI3 - (aye tee eye three) - this will produce a response
with the firmware version as the last few digits. After applying the update
my firmware is now v1.511
Have you actually run the firmware updater prog? - this is placed in a
folder called Global Village Software, which is itself placed in the top
folder of your HD (same one as your system folder). It doesn't run
automatically when you install the software update, you have to run it
yourself.
Failing all the above, most times when I get an error of the sort you're
describing it turns out that AppleTalk is switched on and using the port I
want - though this shouldn't apply in the case of a PC card...
