Russ - are you planning on access your neighbors wireless setup from your home next door????? Those access points usually have a limited range (about 300') You can put a booster antenna on them to up the signal strength but those are mainly handy for boosting the signal to penetrate thick rock walls and whatnot... Make sure your in range of where the access point is installed or you may be disappointed...
As for the 3400... I just had mine open and dropped in a 10GB drive and a 64MB Ram card. I picked up the drive off of ebay (IBM Travelstar) for $49.00 and I got the RAM from ebay as well (brand new in sealed box) for $30.00 (So a total $79.00 investment) That brings my total system RAM to 80MB (64MB + 16MB (on board)). I would have gone 128MB, but with those chips going around $90, I couldn't pass up the 64MB chip for only $30.00 (I haven't seen one go for that littel ever since...) I loaded up 8.6 as I heard from many sources that it was more stable on the 3400 than OS 9. I haven't had any complaints. I refuse to load anything Microsoft on my Mac, so I am running Netscape (4.05 I believe). It doesn't move quite as fast as IE 6 on my 466Mhz 128MB Ram Windooze box, but it's still quite zippy - no complaints.
