I just found that I need to do that in my 3400 as well. It works fine except when I let the battery drain completely before charging it back up. If I do that, my date and time get reset to the *defaults*. I figure I should change it now before it gets worse.
It's a no-brainer to change it. If you've ever had the keyboard out to put Ram in it, your 75% of the way there... With the keyboard out, pop out the additional RAM expansion board if you have one installed and look above it (towards the screen). You'll see the battery hiding there behind some case plastic. I believe there are 2?? Screws that hold that case plastic in and you'll have full access to the battery. Unplug the old one, plug in the new and reassemble...
