I've got an Olympus D490 with a 128Mb SmartMedia card. I have a
PCMCIA adapter for the SmartMedia to read it on my PB5300c. It works
quite well. I haven't really used it much with the PB5300, 128Mb
stores so many pictures that I haven't had to download to the laptop
yet. If you can go with a camera using CompactFlash or SmartMedia.
They are the two most common flash memory formats.

Avoid the serial port, it is painfully slow. From the few tries I
did with my camera I'd probably use up a set of batteries just trying
to download one card (or possibly not even get through one card).

My daughter has a Kodak DC3200 which uses CompactFlash (I also have
an adapter for that). It's a 1 MP camera, no zoom but it takes
pretty nice pictures. I've seen them around for less than $100.
