I understand that this type of sale undoubtedly leads to people using software for which they own no license.
But I can think of circumstances in which I would gladly pay extra to have pre-installed software for which I own a license. I use M$ FoxPro 2.6 for the vast majority of my work and own a number of copies of 2.5 and 2.6 for Mac, and later editions of Visual FoxPro for PCs. I recently got a TiBook for work, and had to figure out how to install over 17 floppies worth of FoxPro onto a machine without a floppy drive. Not to mention the hours I wasted waiting to feed the next floppy. Especially with older software, it can be so much of a pain in the neck to install, that I'd gladly pay extra to have software pre-installed, as long as I own or can obtain a license. At a job we used to work at, I administered network and supported a boatload of macs running photoshop, QuarkXPress, etc. Along with a number of fonts that we purchased, plug-ins, utilities, etc. Getting new machines in was a major hassle, especially when we started upgrading to B&W G3s. We used QuarkXPress 3.3x, which we owned many legal copies of, but only on floppy. It wasn't worth a couple of hundred bucks per box to upgrade to QXP 4. But I would gladly have paid out of my own pocket to not have dealt with the installs. todd -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
