Seems like a very good life but a poor run down !

Battery Recondition should be in the Apple s/w somewhere.

'best' type to watch for?

My experience is the newer the Powerbook and battery technology the more
likely the battery to useable after a significant shelf time - Li-On is
battery than Ni-Mh is better than Ni-Cad is better than Lead Acid.

My G3 and G4 you couldn't have on bare legs ! There are some utilities
around which tell you how hot the processor is running - but you have to
know what normal is.

NO !

A SCSI port is powered you should NEVER plug or unplug devices while the
Powerbook is on. Like many others I've done it and got away with it, but
I've also seen a number of Powerbooks (esp. 5300/190) with dead SCSI ports
...

The on/off refers (I assume) to whether the adapter is set to dock mode
rather than the adapter being on or off.
