The actual modem config was Internal, and "Global Village > Gold", which I'm pretty sure it is. ... > The 540c's running MacOS 8.1. I've got a 8.1 540c with a GV powerport mercury, and I've been having the same symptoms. I've found that if I click "connect" again after getting the "in use" notice, I get a different error message-- this one about not getting the correct response from the modem- "please check connections." Oh yeah-- it's not too difficult to check what kind of modem it is, if you're careful and have a #8 torx screwdriver. The modem card is underneath the memory expansion card, which is underneath the middle metal cage underneath the keyboard. Two screws, a bit of fiddling, and you're there. Mine was marked on the top. I've tried the express modem software recommended by the person with the swell name (Dana, but not me) but my startup freezes on the express modem extension. I looked around a bit on the web, and apparently my mercury is a software modem, meaning that it uses the 540c processor to handle the regular modem tasks-- so it needs pretty specific software to run it. Global Village Fax Center 2.5.5, I think. It'll probably slow programs down a bit. I have an external modem that works, but it would be nice to be able to use the internal modem once in a while-- even at 19.?k. -- Dana (a different Dana) Rottach [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
