I would get a dremel, cut the thing open carefully, and order the 
individual battery packs.  You should be able to do it for a lot less 
than $200. You risk killing it but if it's dead already (shrug). 
there is one guy on ebay that sells batteries, his ebay ad says he'll 
give you $8 for a dead battery; I'm sure this is what he does.

There isn't an online instruction manual for refurbing the 1400 
batteries but there is one for the 500/540 series, and it should be 
even easier than the 5xx series since the 1400 has less circuitry in 
the battery pack (I believe).

Sometime I will do this to one of my 1400 battery packs, but first I 
need to get done with 3 other projects, one of which is getting 
really late. When I try it, success or fail I'll put pictures of the 
innards on the web so the next person can start a little more 
informed.
