I had a trhift shop classic with Empower on it, ugh! Could not access the drive. I remember trying to start with extensions off, it would not finish booting unless the unknown password was entered. It would not let me at the hard drive if I booted with a floppy. I tried Mt. Everything and Norton and it still would not load. I got lucky when I booted from an external hard drive because the internal (Empower protected) drive came up as, unreadable and "did I want to format this drive..." YES! Lost whatever was on that drive, but at least I was able to access it long enough to format it. (I was about to tear it out and throw it in the trash!) Don't know how much this helps with the 2300. Try everything to get that drive reformatted and then have a way to reinstall the system. If you have an internal modem, you'll need to load the software for that also, IIRC, that's not installed with the system installer (at least with OS 8) -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
