I do video capture on another Mac and found that 9.1 allows whatever remaining free space there is on the drive to be used for huge (23 gig) video files. 8.6 and earlier places a 1.9 gig limit to what can be stored. 9.1 requires more memory to run so if your 3400 is a 180 it will boot at a slow pace. >>stay with 8.6.
