I've noticed that with OS 9.2.2, I now have a large amount of "library" extensions with names like kpagrdr.shlb , which makes me feel like a hapless Windows user, never knowing whether an extension is part of some obscure, hardly-used function, or a vital part of the System which must never be removed. Way back in the old days (ie System 7), I could browse through my Extension Folder and pretty much tell what every item there was for, and decide on the spot whether or not to move it to my Extensions (disabled) Folder. Mind you, there were maybe a hundred items in there at the most. IF I was ever stuck, there were shareware apps out there which described every extension, and what it was for. Now, Extensions Manager tells me no more than the standard info box (ie: "Library"), and so I'm stuck with a 148MB extension folder (my Extensions (disabled) Folder is 70MB). Is there ANY help out there for weeding these items in OS 9 ? Am I just stuck in my Old Way of Thinking, which has been superceded by later System architecture and no longer applies? According to my "about this computer" query, my OS is using 66MB, which doesn't strike me as exorbitant, and my System Folder lists at 626MB (I don't know if that would include invisible files). If I had a lot of time to kill, it'd be interesting to go back to say, System 8.6 (or 7.5.3 hahaha), and see what happens to those figures, and to the apparent speed of the machine. Wonder what Vital Functions I might lose ...? I moved up to 9.2.2 in the first place, because OS 9.0.4 couldn't see my Liteon CD burner, and 9.2.2 could. BTW, this is on a G4 400 purchased new from Apple in Sept 2000 (and it feels like an old machine these days). I really am curious to know what all that junk in there is for... m -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
