OS 9 uses RAM differently than 8: it takes a certain percentage of available resident RAM regardless of how much you have. This means that unlike 8, it is impossible to strip it down very much to save RAM for apps. The one exception I have found was the faxware extensions, which are loaded by default. I never used it anyway, but discovered an extension conflict and uninstalled it. Sys RAM usage went down. On my 1400 upgraded G3, I noticed a slight speed hit when I "upgraded" to 9.1 from 8.6, but after about an hour, I had adjusted. (Don't get me started on how slow 10.2.2 is on my 500MHz iBook). The odd thing about speed, I think, is that you pace your work according to the computer, since a "hurry up and wait" approach is too stressful. When the computer slows down, the user unconsciously slows down, too. Moving from 8.6 to 9 won't double your work time, but if it takes several seconds just for a window to open (oops, I'm starting...), then one's work speed is affected. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
