Tim mentions that the M4402 was a best ever form factor. I won't despute
his exact point, but the restraint on the jack end is not as robust as it
should have been. Any sign of wear in that area and it's time to replace
the unit, or  rewire it. I suspect that the recall also had something to do
with this problem. Experience has taught me that a short circuit can be
catastrophic for the 3400's mother board. I thought it would have fused
out, but it didn't. I was never able to determine whether it was the PSB or
the main board, so I replaced to whole enchalada. My full RAM complement
survived, thankfully. Something to consider when replacing/substituting. I
once saw a third party replacement for the M4402 that was smaller and yet
more robust in the cable and it's restraints. And it was at a very
reasonable price (about 5,000 yen).   - Lorne
