I just acquired my first powerbook, a 180c. The owner says he has the power brick, but couldn't find it at the moment, and will give it to me when he can. Being the holiday season, that will likely be about 2 weeks from now. So - here's the situation. It has a battery, a replacement by BTI. That thing is profoundly dead, less than a volt. I'm unsure whether it will hold a charge but I'd be willing to take a chance on trying it it. Now, according to specs, the 'book needs a 7.5v, 3A Max DC power supply. I tried it with my universal adapter, which only provides 600mA, and it was still lifeless. Now that I think of it, I pray that I didn't fry it with the wrong polarity, being impatient, I tried both. So - several questions. Should it have booted with only 600mA? Is there a way I can modify my adapter to produce a higher amperage, without killing myself or destroying it in the process? Also, does anyone know the correct polarity to use, so I can attempt to charge the battery; even 600mA should be able to give it some juice back, right? If that's not a good idea, maybe charging the battery externally could be an option, too.
