From personal experience: One time I accidently stuck a regular set of alkaline batteries in my Rayovac recharger along with some actual rechargables. Went back the next day to use them, and was surprised to note that not only did they recharge, but they seemed to be intact. Thinking myself quite clever, I used them until they were dead again (much shorter than their original life, but it was still free time) and decided to see what happened if I recharged them again. Again it worked, but a day or so later I use using the device with them in it (my wireless optical mouse) when I heard a loud POP! from the mouse. Opened up the battery compartment and one of the batteries had sprung a leak somewhere and was leaking something viscous into the mouse. Got them out quickly and cleaned up the mouse, but it was a pain. Later that day I heard another loud pop as the second battery did a similar thing. Needless to say, I haven't tried recharging non-rechargables again. Hate to think what would have happened if they'd gone when I wasn't home, or in the charger.
