1) See the FAQ at http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/350.html
for hints on partial support of the 1400 by MkLinux.

2) See http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/ for info on efforts to port
linuxppc to the NuBus architecture, including the 1400.

3) If I remember correctly, ethernet support was spotty at best: you
pretty mch had to have one of the built-in cards, as PMCIA/PC cards were
not supported. Unless you're experienced with linux at a fairly deep
level, you might be better off selling the 1400 and buying a cheap
Lombard G3 or a 3400 instead.

4)Tenon Intersystems developed a very cool implementation of BSD as a
MacOS application called Power MachTen. Essentially, the complete unix
system runs as a MacOS app, and it supports the usual assortment of open
source software (e.g. Apache, Perl), X Windows, etc. I used to run it all
the time on my 44 MB PB 1400 under MacOS 8.6, and the performance was
pretty decent. Tenon is closing it out at $99. See
http://www.tenon.com/closeout_order.shtml
