'Fail to boot' means that the cursor appears, but the
screen remains blank, and the internal HDD is not
making the usual spinning noises. The flashing disk
may or may not appear - I realize that is a good sign
as it usually leads to recognition of a system folder
wherever it may be (incl. the FDD).

Zapping the PRAM - yes, incl. using TechTools' method.
We have taken apart the internals and let them 'rest'
overnight. We have not tried the 'short circuit'
method  suggested before installing a drive bigger
than 4 Gig (too risky).

Questions: If the PRAM battery is removed - does
zapping the PRAM do anything?

Does anybody remember the battery issue? (I'm shooting
in the dark, here.) There was something about the
batteries not being charged properly while inside the
battery bay, or something, because of a faulty
connection.
