It's a good sign in that the motherboard perceives the HDD on the bus, but
it's bad news in that a valid System Folder cannot be found.

Since it's the original drive, two things that pop to mind are stiction or
that there's a loose connector.

However, you may have just hit on the correct solution, namely to view this
as a "happy accident" and get a new, fast, spacious drive.  Whatever you
value your time at, multiply by the number of hours you've spent so far or
might continue to spend troubleshooting, and you probably come close to the
price of a replacement drive.  (Or at least close enough to permit easy
rationalization... ;-) )
