Thanks, Eric. I have indeed spent many free hours searching for a solution, and the gurus I'm consulting are also anxious to see if another drive will behave the same or not.
I have not exhausted the SW route, having today found some oddball utilities on the Macfixit site. Does anybody have the original 7.6 install images that came with the 3400? All I have is one Disk Tools floppy, and it does not contain the 'true' 7.6 contents intended for the 3400, but earlier and/or smaller versions in order to fit on the floppy. I'm thinking the 'full install' contains drivers, etc, that may be critical in rebuilding the default settings.
