I bought a 540c display off of eBay, but it just shows up as 16 grays
(although color is an option it doesn't actually display color) on both
of my 520's.

What did you buy? An entire display or just an LCD or ??
IIRC, the cable from the LCD to the bottom board is the only LCD-specific
cable of the trio, each type LCD has its own special cable. The various
makes (3 different brands IIRC) of active color LCDs each have their own
special cable as well.

I bought the entire housing, it came in a very nice 540c bezel. Then I took it apart and it's the same screen as the two leftover grayscale units I already have. I contacted the seller and he's sending me another. I also mentioned the mobo to lcd cable, since that was the one I thought was different.
