If you don't want to keep anything on the drive, just use Drive Setup and
'slick' it, then install everything you want.  Otherwise, it could be the
desktop database (at least for the display of the desktop).  Also, what's
the first extension?  Is it possibly an anti-virus or HD health scanner
that's simply checking the entire disk on each boot?  Finally, if all else
fails, you may want to pop the Kanga open and make sure everything is
properly seated (though that should really cause a failure).

[In fact, depending on the RAM & HD, *before* you start really using it is
the perfect time to do all your upgrades...]
