Hello everybody!

I have the possibility to buy two different vintage powerbooks. Both are in
great shape but I don't know which one to choose... maybe you can help me?!

The available computers are the 520 and the 5300cs, both are at 45$ (the 520
will be sold with a soft case). The 5300cs is cool because of the color
screen but the reputation of the 5300 serie is not the best you can find ;)!
The 520 is quite cool too because it's tiny and the battery will hold longer
thanks to the greyscale screen. So that's my problem... which one to choose?

What do you want to use it for. If it's anything close to modern (web surfing for example) the 5300 is better. 68K browsers are limited in what they can do. If you're just interested in word processing then it's more of a toss up.

Do you know what condition the batteries are in. Being that the 520 is older it's batteries are more likely failing. Also the 520 batteries are some of the most expensive batteries Apple ever produced.

I have a 5300c and two 540s. None of the batteries in the 540s hold a decent charge so I haven't used them portable. The 5300c I did use extensively, primarily when on the road. It worked pretty well. It was limited for web surfing because of the screen size and CPU speed but could be used. For E-mail it was fine.

One important difference, the 5300 takes IDE drives which allows for much larger drives than the 520s SCSI. I put a 20Gb drive in my 5300c. One trick I used with it was to create a diskcopy image of CD-ROMs and put it on the HD. It turned out to be simpler (no CDs to lug around) and faster).
