Thanks Illovox and David. Looks like I am going to need to hunt down some more RAM. Hopefully this will address the issue quite well I hope. I love the speed boost, and I know that RAM is always the first speed boost I should go for, but at the time I had the chance of someone making the purchase for me. Doesn't happen that often and the RAM was put off.

It's the ram. Up to 64. I have the 466 and the cache is enabled, and it
works fine. I use an IBM 20 gig. I use the last iTunes for 9.1, ie iTunes
1.X. I use a an Orinoco Silver card for wireless networking to the 7 other
puters in the house. All is well

I have had a Powerbook 1400cs with 40MB of RAM since it was new. About
4 years ago I replaced the processor with a Sonnet Crescendo PB 400Mhz
G3, and I loved it. I have recently pulled the beast out for play,
wiped the HD (which needs to be replaced...still the original 750MB)
and did a complete reinstall of OS 9.0.4 then upgraded to 9.1.

My question is with the Crescendo "driver" that enables the backside
cache. It is much needed, but ever since I bought the upgrade, it
tends to cause the powerbook to crash quite often. With the extension
disabled, it never crashes. Back when I bought the thing, this
happened and upon calling Sonnet, they said that 9.1 should fix it
(this was before 9.1 was released). It never really did fix it (only
made the crashes a little less frequent), so I have survived without
the benefit of the cache, but not happily. I have tried the most
recent driver on their website, with no better luck. I have often
wandered if it was because of my limited RAM, and if I were to get
another 24MB chip ($70...ouch) if it would change things.

On another note, I have thought about purchasing a MobileStor drive
from MCE (Other World Computing). I have heard that a 1400 would see a
huge speed benefit from such a HD upgrade, especially sided with a chip
upgrade. I have my eye fixed on the 40GB with an 8MB cache (just
slightly more than the other 40GB HD). I have thought of turning this
little thing into a storage for my MP3's that I can connect to my G4,
either through SCSI (if possible) or ethernet. Has anyone ever used
these drives, and does anyone see any cons in doing this. Also, what
was the last iTunes released for OS 9.1 and where could I find it?

Sorry for the length and all the questions. They have been building up
for many years now. I may return with more at a later time.
