I haven't used my 540c for e-mail, but it is web-capable, and e-mail is
generally a less intensive app.
Pros:
As with several other Powerbooks, I've read it can do wireless if set up
properly with PCMCIA.
Also, the PCMCIA capability, as discussed here recently, makes it handy for
compact flash based
digital cameras, etc, and running on battery power w/o the HDD draining
power.
Cons:
Memory is limited, unless you pay big money for the special RAM card. I'm
not sure, but this may
eliminate use of the bay for PCMCIA or 2nd battery.
Screen size is non-standard and small; makes it awkward at best for
web-browsing.
While the batteries can be great, it may take a few tries to find a couple
of good ones.
Hinge/screen may occur, but seem to happen with others also.
Summary:
I think it would be good for text-only e-mail, but HTML e-mails or web
browsing might be more trouble.
have a 520c, but I'd rather use the 540c as my main e-mail machine, and as a
planner/organizer,
but the hinge issues are too much of a pain (works fine when you find the
"right spot",
until you close the lid again).
