I never had to move it back and forth and "bless" anything--just copied the system folder over to the target drive. I've done this on 2 different volumes.
Did you format the target drive with Apple disk setup software first? I didn't know about this at first and just formatted the volume with the finder and nothing happened--the disk setup program writes the bootup blocks the Mac needs.
