All PowerBooks, and for that matter every laptop I have ever used in my
entire life works without the batteries.

The 5xx "Intelligent" batteries are ridiculously priced.  Try to find a used
one on ebay.

I would recommend not doing this, but rather buy a 500 series Power Adapter
on eBay if you don't have one.
