I believe what you're talking about just indicates that you need to use the username/pwd that you use to log into your OS X box. I've found that a little annoying as you can't enter a password longer than 8 characters from OS 9- for Appletalk, which limits the security of your password on your OS X box. The easiest way I've found to transfer files from OS 9 to X is ftp. Start up ftp via the Sharing panel in Sys Prefs and you're golden. Make sure (I believe) that passive mode is *off* on your client ftp app -- I use Transmit, one of the few programs I've shelled out for in OS 9. That does the trick for me, and you can make passwords as long as you'd like.
