I'm trying to set up a network using my two old powerbooks, (540 with Power Upgrade and Revision C PCMCIA card, 5300C with all the trimmings) my elderly but upgraded 7600 desktop and a desktop PC. Call me enthusiastic - please. The Upgraded Powerbook 540C runs OS8.0 with no problems. I have tried the "tweak" of getting it to run higher systems with no success, but this doesnt really matter as it works with the Enterasys card in it. The 5300C runs O.S.9 and works using ether a Farallon or an Enterasys card. So both transmit AOK. The desktop PCuses anything including a Cisco card and transmits perfectly. The only problem I have is what do they transmit to?? I have Graphite Airport base station but I cannot get into to it to reset its controls. I have been told that you need an ethernet cable (not radio) connection to set the AirPort base station up. This is possible as I can use an ethernet RJ45 cable from the Desktop 7600 - BUT I cannot load the Airport set-up programmes on to the 7600 despite its running OS 9.0.4 which is stated as the minimum to operate with. So I have several questions. 1. Is it possible to reset the base station somehow using any or all combinations of the above hardware? 2. Do I need more hardware of any sort? 3. If setting up this wireless network is not possible is anyone looking for a shortly to be ditched Graphite base station?
As an additional point, The Airport set-up downloaded from Apple ( Version 1.3.1 will not actually load on to any of the above machines although it says it works with OS9.0.4 it gives error messages when loading which vary from "Error of type 2 ocurred" on the Apple SW installer to "This programme cannot run on your computer" Maybe its just time to throw it all in and upgrade to a modern junky PC? - No, forget I said that.
