Unless you've got 64MB of RAM, I wouldn't bother with 9.x. There are those who will inevitably disagree, but I find 8.6 to be the best tradeoff between modern features and usability on 5300s.
What Drew said...when I put 9.1 on my 5300 it was a dog. With 8.6 it's still a dog, but it can get up and chase the tennis ball now.
