Maybe related to John's question for a disk defragmenter:
My 500/PPC with original harddisk (325MB) takes longer and longer to
start up as time goes by. My question is whether this is because of
fragmenting, or something else?

Some more details: After all extensions had been loaded, it took ages
before the menus and the desktop appeared.
I tried to rebuild the desktop file, but that didn't make any
difference. Then I copied the contents to an external harddisk,
formatted the internal one (not low-level), and copied back the
contents, including System folder. That fixed the problem.

That is a few months back now, and already the startup is noticeably
slower again. I would like to have a better solution, or at least to
know what's going on. I don't have the feeling that the pbook works
slower, just the startup.

I should say that I'm using 7.6, that I've experimented a lot with different extension configurations (including a newer Appearance which is necessary for one program), and that there were quite some system crashes. Also, the harddisk is quite full usually: only some 30 MB free.

Was the machine formerly ethernetted?

I disconnected the ethernet on mine and soon noticed longer startups. Then a lister her told me to look for a server file. ( forget exactly where) Sure enough it was filled up with re[eats of the names of the other machines it was always looking for.
You can turn the search off and empty that file..

Sorry I can't recall exact file locations right now. But check your network setup.

Fragmentation will also lengthen startup. And the bigger/slower the drive the worse the effect.
