Have you turned off memory check?
To turn off the memory check (hold down Option when opening the Memory control
panel to get to the hidden checkbox to turn it off)

As for the other computers(servers in network speak) do a Sherlock search for
the network names of these machines. You may be surprised to find a growing
folder of them. And your machine may be looking for each one on startup. Mine
had 117 !

Subject: Hard drive question

Thanks, Adrian, for your answer! I think we're getting closer to the
problem, although not quite hot yet.

>>Was the machine formerly ethernetted?
Yes, I go online with it through a small network from time to time, but
also have to start up often without being connected. Would it make a
difference if I always switched off AppleTalk when disconnecting? I
usually don't...

Only, I never connect to servers, the 'network' is just a router+modem
connecting several computers to the internet. So naturally, the folder
'Recent Servers' is empty, and I can't figure out what else this 'server
file' you mention could be. Any more comes to mind, or a hint what I
should search for in the PowerBooks archive?

I looked into the AppleTalk Prefs file and the TCP/IP Prefs file (not
the Control Panels, but the Preferences files themselves): both are
quite small and don't contain repetitions.

Re. Fragmentation: Yes, that's clear. But how do you like my more brutal
method--copying all files (including the System folder...) to another
harddisk and putting them back after a format? At least it avoids
problems with defragmentation programs that don't support certain file
systems...
Anyone knows of a good free defragmentation program? Also for 68K
computers, as asked before.

PLMK
