Thanks Adrian for your response. The 'network' I connect to is only a router that gives several users internet access. I very rarely connect to another Mac on that router, and that's all regarding 'servers'.

So I looked for that computer's name with FindFile, but there's no file with that name on the harddisk. Then I used FileBuddy to look inside all files in the System folder: nada... ( except two kind of registration files where the name occurred only once).
Remember on each startup the OS goes through a list of machines to
>look for. Any idea where that list could be found?
Otherwise I'll just give up and copy the harddisk back and forth from time to time--which makes a nice backup as well...
