Dan writes, <Apple Filing Protocol. That's what you be using over AppleTalk when you have File Sharing enabled...>
I KNEW it -- that I'd know what this abbreviation would stand for, even though I didn't recognize it by abbreviation alone. Sheeesh....! Thanks. <Some of the files in your System Folder are kept open by the running system. At least the System file itself, and the Finder, maybe a few others. If you try to just drag an active System Folder to another Mac, AFP will give you an error when it hits those open files. So you need to make a local copy of things first - so nothing is open. If you just drag those files to your desktop, the Finder will move (not copy) them with no complaint -- and you'll break your System Folder! Option-Drag tells the Finder to make a *copy* of the file, not just move it.> Well, as I write this email on my G3, my 5300c is presently restarting from just having finished the 8.6 installation. I ended up going ahead and doing it without the 8.5 "backup" because despite the option-drag, I had problems copying ..ohhhhh, Praise Ratness. My desktop is coming up unharmed! (whew!).... now what is THIS? I didn't even INSTALL it, and it's opening under AW6?! Sorry -- this is what I get for doing two things at once huh? I'm not good at multitasking, as you can see. ANYHOW, here's what happened. I set up my AppleTalk/'FileSharing printer port network and tried to move my option-dragged copy of the 5300c's system folder over to the G3. During the copy process, several items stopped the procedure (files in use or something like that), and I was given the choice of stop or continue. I continued anyway, for awhile. I know printer port networking is slow, and usually I'm patient -- I'll go off and read a book, put on a movie or some Star Trek, make a phone call or whatever, while the Macs do their thing, but last night I couldn't bring myself to totally stay off the computer (I just HAD to go visit my fellow writerbuddies in our hangout on IRC... because it was our "prime time" and a few of us are collaborating on an interactive story). Anyway, I finally gave up with all the problems -- doing something on the computer while it's transferring data like this causes it to freeze, so I learned, and I had to restart the "backup 8.5" thing twice. So I decided to just go ahead and install 8.6 (which was actually on the G3's hard drive), but it wouldn't install over the network: the "select destination" wouldn't read up the 5300c (although the 5300c showed up on the G3's desktop). Which meant more transferring. I moved the following over to the 5300c -- the 8.6 update folder, the QuickTime 4.1.2 install, AW6 and a couple other things it occurred to me I wanted on the 5300c but hadn't thought to transfer when I loaded it up originally. At that point I was facing an overnight transfer -- and it was late, so I left my Macs alone, watched a Trek episode and went to sleep. Yeah, sorry I'm rambling and somewhat unfocused...but I'm still having my morning coffee -- hahaha -- and mental functioning tends to elude me before noon anyway. Well -- I did want to impart the details of how the upgrading procedure went -- and to ask if you have any idea why I had those problems copying the 8.5 System Folder over to the G3 -- and why 8.6 wouldn't install over the network. That's just a matter of curiosity at this point, since the 8.6 update DID install succesfully after I transferred it to the Powerbook and the Powerbook seems to be working perfectly well. <Welcome to the Universe of Steve Jobs. AppleWorks 6 is, IMO, a big screw from Jobs.> Snipping your comparison list for brevity (thank you so much for providing it though: the unedited version of your email is getting saved for reference) -- BUT.....although reading that list makes me sorry I moved from AW5 to AW6 on the G3 (that's why I wanted to make the same move "up" on the 5300c, so WP would be exactly the same on both my desktop and laptop, a condition I haven't had the luxury of experiencing at all, until now)...Looks like I'm stuck, since AW5 will not open files which were saved as AW6, and I'm not inclined to go back and save my hundreds and hundreds of word processing files back down to AW5 and get rid of AW6. However, the news isn't all bad -- this is because the ONLY thing I use AppleWorks for is word processing -- straight text. I don't need or use spreadsheets, "telecom," etc., and I don't really need the manual either. AW6 has my primary use font, plus, should I decide I want to experiment, I can always add more fonts from a CD full of them my boyfriend made for me or go hunting for more to download off the web (it's been a long time since I've done that, but I figure the option is still available). Oh yeah, and by the way, the version of AW6 I have is 6.2.8. In fact, since my original objective of getting AW6 to run on the 5300c is now achieved, I find I don't need to install the QuickTime 4.1.2 anymore; the only reason I downloaded it at all was because I thought that was the only way to get the AW6 running on the 5300c. Well, thank you so much for all your helpful and informative comments. I'm going to go play with my 5300c and explore 8.6 a bit. ~Yersinia. ________ "Come, muse, let us sing of rats!" -- James Grainger, 1721-67 -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
