Dan writes,

<Do you get fancy formatting that text, at all? If not, you might
want to try a traditional/programmer's text editor, such as BBEdit
Lite or Alpha. They're much faster, especially on older/slower Macs.
Kindof like SimpleText on steroids.>

Well, there are certain things I do, insist on doing, and would be
miserable if I couldn't do, formatting-wise, although I doubt you'd call
them fancy. I use smart quotes, I indent paragraphs (depending what it
is, either just indenting the first line, or "block indenting" an entire
paragraph), sometimes I italicize and/or bold things, and change the font
size. Occasionally I center text and justify the margins as well, and
though it's infrequent, there are times I use TWO fonts in a document
instead of just one -- but all of this is pretty basic. I used to do a
little more (when I wrote letters as snail mail), such as make my own
stationery by having template documents with clip art I selected and laid
out, but those days are in the past.

Never heard of Alpha, but I do have BBEdit Lite (on the G3 though, not
the Powerbook). I've had it awhile, and I use it on the rare occasion I
have a file which won't open any other way. (It all started when I
couldn't open a chat log under either SimpleText or ClarisWorks 4 that I
was using at the time...someone suggested BBEdit, and that opened it
right up.)

Anyway, having just gone through my "new and improved" Powerbook, I'm
very pleased at the moment. OS 8.6 doesn't seem to make any speed
difference from 8.5 like the G3 did when I kicked that up to 9.2.2 from
9.1 nor does it do anything else I find noticeable), but much to my
immense relief, nothing got lost or ruined in the upgrade, and since AW 6
runs on the Powerbook now, I've achieved my goal of being able to simply
transfer WP files between the G3 and the Powerbook without having to do
that extra saving maneuver.
