And here's what I want when it comes to features:
Internal floppy drive
Internal CD-ROM drive that can read CD-RW
800x600 screen (preferably TFT but it doesn't have to be)
Nice keyboard
Working battery
You're not gonna find anything like that for anywhere near $50, but
decently configged 1400's and 3400's can be had for under $150. The
1400 is a sweet little 'Book, but I'd hunt for a 3400 (200 or 240 MHz)
if I were in your shoes.
Higher RAM ceiling (144 vs 64 MB) and PCI vs NuBus architecture would
be my main reasons. Other considerations/comparisons:
- 1400 can be easily upgraded to G3, no upgrade path for 3400. A
3400/240 running OS 8.1 or 8.6 could be fast enough for your uses,
though.
- 1400's small form factor and light weight compared to 3400.
- Config details, peripherals and price point will almost certainly
vary widely on the used market. If you stumble into a nice bundle at a
good price, go for it -- don't hold out for a particular model 'Book
because of some arbitrary set of specs/standards in your head. If
properly configged you should be quite content with either model.

I can't brag about the shape I'm in - I can't sing, I ain't pretty and
my legs are thin; but don't ask me what I think of you - I might not
give the answers that you want me to. Oh well....
