Ah yes, I remember this when working the call center at a local ISP :)

Two things, AOL uses it's own TCP stack, this includes whether on a MAC or a
PC. This is a proprietary thing and AOL's stack is tweaked to it's own
dialup numbers.

Now then there may be a conflict with the standard TCP and the AOL stacks.
Things to try out first:

1) Remove the AOL stacks by searching/finding any and all files that have
AOL in them, create a temp folder on your desktop and move them into this
folder.

2) Make sure to use the newest dialer and stack combo, preferably under OS
8.xx or later. This should be called Remote Access and be sure the correct
CCL script is selected in the modem control panel as well, or you may have
to install the correct one from the modem install CD or floppy disk.

3) Find/Search for the tcp/ip preferences file, put this in the temp folder
you created on your desktop.

4) Now click on the Special menu and restart the computer.

You will probably have to reconfigure your dialer settings, again this
should be Remote Access and not FreePPP or ConfigPPP, unless you have a
pre-OS8 installed.

Apple should also have info on this at their Knowledge Base site:

Please bear w me - not nearly as knowledgeable as most of you.
Just moved to a rural area and chose Earthlink over AOL --only choices.
But...Earthlink won't connect
with my 180e PowerTower w a 33.6 Global Village Silver modem. Instead I
get a message stating I'm
connected at "an unknown rate" and there is no further connection. I
supposedly have a "dirty" line (?) yet I have no problem whatsoever
connecting fully with AOL! Earthlink tech people say to get another
modem script(?) but I went to Global V. site and couldn't find what I
needed- as if I know.
I do have a newer G3 Powerbook and it connects just fine (56k modem). Is

the answer to switch to a 56? Where would I get one? Thanks in advance
