My guess is that the Global Village modem is at fault. I had one of
those and it never worked right... not even with AOL. Have a friend
in NYC who had same modem and she had nothing but problems with it
right out of the box. I heard Global Village was no more, so there's
no tech support help available. Go with a new modem, or get
something like the US Robotics 56k external. You can probably pick
one up on eBay for under $50.00.
