I'm assuming that when you changed to OS 8, you were careful to reinstall the CD-ROM Toolkit software that came with your machine originally. Apple in essence did not license its CD driver to Power Computing, so Power Computing instead used the third-party FWB CD-ROM Toolkit software (and also its hard drive software). Most Apple CD driver software will work only with Apple-branded CD drives (the exception being the "Apple CD-ROM" extension version 5.3.1 that came with OS 7.6; there are also some hacked versions of the newer "Apple CD/DVD Driver" that work pretty universally with third-party CD drives). If you installed OS 8 from a standard Apple CD, and did a clean install, it is likely that the FWB CD-ROM Toolkit software is missing and the Apple CD driver software cannot recognize your Toshiba CD drive. If so, your poor Toshiba is like a stranger in a strange land, sitting idly by, unable to speak the local language. And if so, you should locate and install your old FWB software or seek out the Apple CD-ROM v. 5.3.1 software. I would advise against buying the FWB software; many consumers have found themselves paying FWB again and again when they want software upgrades; a better alternative is Intech Software's CD-DVD Speedtools (no, I'm not associated with the company), which works very well indeed, is cheaper than FWB and which promises you free software upgrades for life. That said ... if your drive is indeed dead, there are many fine CD-RW drives available. I use an internal Yamaha (8-4-24; not the fastest available anymore) personally, and am well pleased. It came with the OEM version of Toast software, which is satisfactory (although I believe the full version of Toast is more full-featured). As Doru Bratu advised, don't buy a drive unless it comes with at least an OEM version of CD burning software.
