Hello folks, I run OS 8.6 on a Power Base 200 (minitower) and am looking for a replacement SCSI CD drive and also a storage device for performing backups. The Toshiba CD-ROM drive that came with the machine stopped working when I upgraded to OS 8.0, and has continued not to work through 8.1, 8.5 and 8.6. Currently I am using a friend's borrowed Apple-branded CD-ROM drive and it works fine with the Apple 8.6 driver (also using a borrowed Zip drive for the time being).
It occurred to be that I could kill two birds with one stone by getting a CD-RW drive, which I understand can both read CD-ROMs and also write data to blank CDs (if this is in error, please forgive my failure to keep up with the technological times). Is this correct? And if so, is there such a beast that would work in my Power Base? (The Toshiba certainly does not.) And regardless, is this my best strategy? I don't mind spending money for quality but by no means do I require anything close to top-of-the-line - just something that will read CD-ROMs and also allow me to perform backups. Prefer internal drive(s), but will do whatever it takes. I also have no clue what kind of associated software might be needed for such a device.
