I bought a Yamaha 8/8/24CDRW SCSI a couple years ago when the original toshiba died in my PTP225. I think I was on 8.1 at the time, and it has continued to work fine through 8.6, 9 & 9.1. CD Rom Toolkit did not support this drive, but I had no problem with apple's drivers, and it shipped with the junior version of Toast, which has also worked through the OS upgrades with no trouble. (the version I'm using is 4.1.3, although I believe that that was a free download or patch or something like that.) The drive has proved very reliable, and was the least expensive internal scsi option at the time. A couple weeks later I saw an 8x CDROM at Computer Geeks for around $8, so I bought that and stuck it in there too. Having two comes in handy sometimes.
