Ron,  one more idea, I had pulled a cd/rom out of a PCP 210 and put it into
my my Umax s900.  (Which I'm sure had nothing to do with the symptoms) After
about a month, it began refusing to mount cd's, especially Memorex.  Had the
exact same symptoms you describe.  Then someone on I believe the Supermac
list recommended that I clean the inside of the drive.  I used compressed
air and thoroughly blew around the reader filament (can't remember tech term
off hand).  This absolutely worked in clearing up the problem.  May be worth
a try and cheaper then buying a whole new drive.
