What I'm tying to say is : "If the rear fan on the power supply isn't
running ... Is Not that a clue to suspect the power supply.

All of this points to "Never risk running your unit unattended with out
a very good surge protector." My Belkin UPS was only $98.00 on sale at
CompUSA (Yes, I hate CompUSA also). My PTP is protected by an APC
Back-UPS Pro 420. 

In a Texas thunder storm, I unplug. Nothing will protect you if the
lightening strikes the line, on your side of the Pole Transformer. I
lost a TV and the lightening just stuck the ground next to the
neighborhood AT&T TV cable box ... 3 doors down.
