That's good too. You can try a variation of the above that might save you 
a step:

Unplug the hard drive's power cable; leave the SCSI ribbon connected. As 
Bertrand says, that may force the computer to boot from the CD. If so, 
reconnect the hard drive's power while the computer is still running from 
the CD.

The HD still isn't mounted of course, but see if HDT can initialize the 
hard drive anyway. It may need to be mounted first somehow; don't know the 
limitations of old versions of HDT.
