Back when I used mice, I thought that the 3M "mousing surface" seemed to
keep my mice the cleanest. It's a thin pad, with tiny little nooks and
crannies, that both grip the ball, yet, don't allow dirt to build up. It's
not porous like other track pads, and is very easy to clean, and keep clean,
which is the usual problem with mouse pads. I don't know how well it will
work with an optical mouse. They weren't cheap when I was buying them, but
they sure were nice. I presume that 3M still makes them.
