Okay, what am I doing wrong.
I have a PTP 200 with the original processor in it and 512 meg of memory. I had been using OS 8.6 installed on the original 2 gig drive and I had a 4 gig second internal drive.
I installed OS 9.1 on a new 18 gig internal drive that I purchased from OWC.
I did the installation from a gray CD that came originally with my iBook. It appears to have worked (I made the new drive the startup drive and installed some of the additional software on it -- Appleworks 6, even though I already had it installed on the original startup drive.
But, I'm getting ahead of myself. it took me lots of starts to get a CD drive working under the new OS. This was a problem even earlier.
When I first got the computer, I wanted the capability to burn CDs so I bought from a friend a Ricoh MP70405 CD-R/RW drive and installed it internally. To burn CDs I installed Toast 4.5.
It was necessary to use another driver to get the Ricoh working and when I got it working, then the original drive no longer worked. I struggled with hacked drivers (the CD/DVD apple driver that comes in three versions, for 8.1, 8.6 and 9.x) and eventually gave up on getting both drives to work under OS 8.6.
Apparently, the problem is still there so playing around with the driver extensions I have the Ricoh working, but still not the original CD drive that came with the computer. I've decided to live with that problem since I can also play CDs on the drive that burns them.
Now to the problem I really have.
I hooked up some really good speakers to the PTP through the external speaker jack. They are amplified speakers with their own volume controls.
I had hoped that once I had OS 9 installed, I could play some music on this computer (no stereo in this room). I want to use that early version of iTunes or at least the AppleCD audio player (the one that says it won't work with any operating system earlier than 9).
Well, I have no sound. The AppleCD Audio Player boots and even shows the number of tracks on the CD (when it is in the Ricoh drive), but it does not play and the digital counter does not advance. The symbol on the start button changes, but no digital count and no sound.
Trying iTunes is not much better. The counter moves on iTunes when a cut is selected and it shows that it is playing, but there is no sound.
Is this because the iTunes is expecting something other than a SCSI device to be providing the signal?
I did take it from the iBook CD.
So, what I am asking is twofold.
If someone knows of a single driver that will work with both the original CD player and the Ricoh player/burner I'd love to get pointed toward it. Or, maybe there are two drivers that won't conflict with each other that will work.
And the same goes for getting my iTunes or AppleCD audio player working. I'd love to be pointed toward an answer.
My ultimate goal is to upgrate the processor to G3, use the PTP running on 9.2.2 with a full gig of ram and at least 80 gig of hard disk space to do my photo work. I have a large monitor and two USB scanners (one for slides and negatives) and a large format inkjet printer to hook up when I get the OS stable and the software installed. (The music is for entertainment in the background.)
Maybe, further on down the line when I am comfortable working in OSX on my other computers, I might try upgrading that far, but for now, 9.2.2 (working) would be great.
