Cheers yourself, sir. You are a stalwart of the Power Computing listserv and
you have helped me through uncertainties.

As they say Chuck - 'misery loves company' - =)

Pardon my enormous ignorance on printer servers -- does this task require
specific software to accumulate and direct print jobs?

Heck no. Just leave your PT setup the way you would normally, and transfer files to it via ethernet.

I transfer (CAD) files from the 1Ghz G4 to the PTP, then RIP it with an basic Epson RIP application, then send to the printer from the PTP via ethernet. One upside is I have two copies of the same file on different HD's, on different CPU's, which is also a reasonable backup system while projects are on the go.

Once I hit print, I can go immediately back to the G4 to work on other things without the annoying hangs that plague background printing.

RIP software for ink-jet printers is a pain in the butt to install, and can be troublesome. If things screw up on the PTP during critical times, I can always connect the 17" format ink jet printer to the G4 directly, and await a more opportune time to fiddle fart with the problem. Of course the same is true the other way, with the PTP c/w XLR8 375mHz G4 and 384mB ram being a reasonable backup to the G4 for working.

Cheers...Michael
(Robert, take note...he said stalwart...that's a good thing, right ?)
