I had this same problem about a month ago, just after 10.4.3 came out,
and fixed it by reinstalling the entire OS, and wasting many hours. 

After I saw the reference to spell checkers....I realized I also had
Spell Catcher running. 

It was working great, but for some reason AFTER I ran Diskwarrior on the
volume (booted from another drive) the crash on reply/new message etc.
came back. 

I uninstalled spell catcher, and the problem went away. No changes to
PowerMail required.

So...it may be weird, but clearly this problem is related to this spell
checker! As to other spell checker issues...I have no idea....
