I had this same problem about a month ago, just after 10.4.3 came out, and fixed it by reinstalling the entire OS, and wasting many hours.
After I saw the reference to spell checkers....I realized I also had Spell Catcher running. It was working great, but for some reason AFTER I ran Diskwarrior on the volume (booted from another drive) the crash on reply/new message etc. came back. I uninstalled spell catcher, and the problem went away. No changes to PowerMail required. So...it may be weird, but clearly this problem is related to this spell checker!
