Could this have to do with OS/X starting swapping a lot? Is there
increased disk activity once PM slows down?

PS: I use a tool called "MenuMeters" (instgall in System Preferences)
that lets me easily check what's going on with my disks, RAM, network
traffic etc.  - very helpful and very unobtrusive.
