I am not expert in these filesystem problems, but putting your PM
database on a fixed size disk image is probably a way to reserve a
contiguous space (as long as such a contiguous space is available when
you create the disk image) that will never get fragmented.

But I am expert in swiss cheese, and I can affirm there is almost no
holes in gruyère!
