Part of the problem is that new people don't know the difference between
HTML and text email. These people just type in text, see that they can
make stuff bold or colored along with graphics and do it because it is
there as their program's default configuration. These are the same people
who usually have HTML pages automatically displayed - with all the
graphics, viruses, and triggers for email harvesting spammers.

I think HTML is persistent in email from ignorance more than anything
else. Spam and viruses wouldn't be the problems they are today without
the ignorance factor. Most of the HTML I receive from those who know the
different formats are usually advertisers who believe their products are
more tempting if displayed with graphics, yet they often leave out
important details about the products they are tempting you with in the
hopes that you will be more gullible because of flash and glitz. Virus
spreaders and spammers count on the ignorant as much as the advertisers
do. I'm hoping that the pen (text) will continue to be mightier than the
(eye-catching appearance) sword in the battle of which is supreme and
long-lasting.
